WATERMELON COASTER CROCHET PATTERN

MATERIALS

Yarn: DK weight cotton blend yarn in red, white, black, light green, and dark green
Recommended yarns:
- Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/6
- Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/6
- Lion Brand Oh Baby Organic Cotton
Thread (optional, in round 8): Lace weight cotton thread in light green
Recommended threads:
- Hobbii Rainbow Lace
- Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Thread Classic 10 Size
2.5mm or 3mm crochet hook
Tapestry needle

Abbreviations used in pattern:
St - stitch
Ch - chain
Sl st - slip stitch
Sc - single crochet
Hdc - Half double crochet
Dc - double crochet
MR - magic ring/magic loop
FO - fasten off

Notes:

  • Starting ch-2 or ch-1 does NOT count as a stitch throughout the pattern.
  • When joining rounds, skip the ch and instead sl st into the first real stitch to join. The ch stitches are just there as “padding” to prevent an unsightly gap in the round.
  • Make sure to wash and block the coaster after it’s complete to get the best results.

COASTER

ROUND 1: With red yarn make MR, ch2, 10 dc into ring, pull tight and sl st in first dc to join. (10 st)

ROUND 2: Ch2, 2 dc in st at base of ch, 2 dc in each st around, sl st in first dc to join. (20 dc)

ROUND 3: Ch2, 2dc in st at base of ch, dc in next st, (2dc in next st, dc in next st) around, sl st in first dc to join. (30 dc)

ROUND 4: Ch2, 2dc in st at base of ch, dc in next 2 sts, (2dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) around, sl st in first dc to join. (40 dc)

ROUND 5: Ch2, 2dc in st at base of ch, dc in next 3 sts, (2dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts) around, sl st in first dc to join, FO. (50 dc)

ROUND 6: Attach white yarn, ch1, 2hdc in st at base of ch, hdc in next 4 sts, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts) around, sl st in first hdc to join, FO. (60 hdc)

ROUND 7: Attach light green yarn, ch1, 2sc in st at base of ch, sc in next 5 sts, (2sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts) around, sl st in first sc to join, FO. (70 sc)

ROUND 8: Attach dark green yarn (optional: hold dark green yarn and light green lace weight thread and work together as one yarn), ch1, 2hdc in st at base of ch, hdc in next 6 sts, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next 6 sts) around, invisible FO.

Invisible FO is optional, I just think it looks nice but you can do any FO method. A tutorial for invisible FO is here.

SEEDS

(This is confusing to explain, so just watch my video tutorial for the best explanation.) Using tapestry needle and black yarn, embroider “seeds” onto round 4 of the coaster. Stitch 3 vertical lines between a pair of dc to make one seed. Space the seeds apart evenly, leaving 4 red dc visible between each seed.

I hope this pattern was helpful! This was my first time writing out a crochet pattern for other people to use, so please let me know if there are any mistakes or if anything was confusing.
