This design combines many of my favorite things: Easy colorwork in the form of stripes, Working on the diagonal, Rectangles, Fibonacci numbers, Surprising design elements. This wrap is a basic rectangle worked on the diagonal using 2 skins of coordinating or contrasting fingering weight yarn. Each skein needs to be AT LEAST 480 YDS (439 M). Model was used with 2-480 yd skeins with very little excess yarn.

You will also need waste yarn and a tapestry needle, but that’s it!

Stitch patterns alternate between Stamen Stitch—a slip stitch pattern with a 2 row repeat-- and Garter Stitch

The size of the stripes are based (loosely) on the Fibonacci Sequence. As the size of stripes increase in one direction they decrease in the other. Thus the name: Waxing and Waning. This creates a reversible wrap that accents one of the two yarns you use. Switch it up to suit your mood!

And the surprising design element is a neck opening that makes this more like a poncho! (If this doesn’t appeal to you just omit the opening and enjoy your reversible rectangular shawl.)

Errata: last Stamen stitch section Row 1 change kfb to ssk.
