The origins of this design are two-fold. On the one hand, I had spun a beautiful roving of merino-bamboo dyed by a local maker. This yarn reminded me of a prairie sunrise (or sunset), which is also the inspirational visual for the 2019 Manitoba Fibre Festival’s Create - Make - Collaborate community make-a-long. At the same time, important conversations were happening in the makers community regarding racism and white privilege. Changes are afoot as more people step out of their comfort zones to listen and find ways to support equitable transformations.

The openness of the stitches evoke clouds lit by dawn on the one hand and, in line with the ongoing conversations, a willingness to listen openly. The diagonal lines evoke rays of sunlight and movement. Although this is a simple two-row pattern that becomes intuitive as you knit, it does require deliberate attention on both rows.

The design has three options:
a small cowl, a long cowl, and an open scarf. Instructions are provided for each. The design can also be easily knit to a desired length.

Meterage and Yardage
Small Cowl - 174 m / 190 yds
Long Cowl - 320 m / 350 yds
Scarf - 370 m / 405 yds
