A few months ago a Facebook friend uploaded a photo of her newly knitted scarf. She has knitted it all in stockinette stitch, then opened up some of the columns from up to down. As a result she got a funky scarf with cool holes.

When I saw that I thought: Naama, this would be the perfect chance to weave- with the knitted work as a frame to the weaving.
So here is the result.

I have made a video tutorial of the process. It is recommended to watch as you work this pattern:

This pattern is perfect for knitting beginners since the knitting part is very easy. However, the stitch count should always stay correct- otherwise the weaving columns will not be formed properly.

The scarf can be knitted in any yarn weight, and the width and length are adjustable. I have used worsted weight yarn, for the knitting, and woven in leftovers in various weights from my stash. Keep in mind that the scarf will become wider by about 30% after opening the stitches and weaving in yarn.

materials: other than the yarn and knitting needles (straight/circular) you will need a gauge size hook for the cast on and a tapestry needle for the weaving.
