I was lucky to meet Lynne of West Coast Colour in person and fell in love with her yarn, especially Homegrown. It has an incredible softness and strength to it. It is so bouncy and feels great against the skin. I was so excited to cast on. The funny thing is, when I cast on, I had a completely different plan for it; I was seeing cables and fringe. Very quickly, my hands and this yarn had a different plan, and Westerly was born. This shawl is such a fun experience, first with the sensory feel of the yarn and then with a play on textures. I hope you enjoy knitting and wearing this shawl as much as I do.

Westerly starts with a garter tab cast-on. It is then worked back and forth in garter stitch, increasing on the wingspan border stitches and in the shawl center to create a triangle. The border stitches are increased at a higher rate than the center to make the wingspan grow slightly larger than the center point of the shawl. Bobbles and loop stitches are added to the body of the shawl for texture and fun. After the shawl body is worked, the border is created using a 2x2 ribbing. Finally, Westerly is bound off with a stretchy bind off of your choice.

Skills needed are: Garter Tab Cast-on, basic increases, bobbles, and loop stitch.

Worsted weight yarn: total approx. yarn used: 250 grams/681 meters/744 yards
Sample Shown in West Coast Colour, HomeGrown 2018, 100% CVM/Romeldale Wool, Worsted 3 ply, approx. 307 meters/336 yards/113 grams, colour Vanilla, (3 skeins).

NOTE: Yardage used is dependent on matching your gauge to pattern.

Needles:
Circular needle is used to accommodate large amount of stitches
4.5 mm/US #7 40 in/100 cm circular, or size to obtain gauge

Notions:
2 markers to denote border stitches
2 markers to denote center increases
1 removable marker to denote right side of fabric
Blocking mat & blocking pins or wires

Gauge:
16.5 sts/32 rows= 4 in/10 cm square in Garter Stitch worked flat using 4.5 mm/US #7 circ needles after blocking in DK weight yarn

Size Information:
Westerly Shawl is long and wide enough to easily wrap around your neck and shoulders to keep you warm when you need it to. It is worked in a loose gauge to give it wonderful drape.
