This listing is for an advanced beginner and intermediate knitting pattern for an adult sized winter hat.

This lovely toque is knit in the round on long circular needles using the magic loop method. If you prefer, you can use shorter circular needles or even 5 double pointed needles. The beauty of this hat is the strand work; also know as Fair Isle knitting.

Note on why I have listed smaller size needles. I knit loosely just as my Norwegian teacher taught me!

Size 2.5 mm and 3.25 mm are the needles sizes that I used to knit the prototype shown in the photos.

I have been knitting for 35 years and see that many people now knit very tightly. Modern knitting patterns suggest very large needles sizes which tend to make people knit too tightly and develop all kinds of physical problems with hands, arms and shoulders. If you are a tight knitter, please use the needle size you prefer to get the gauge of the pattern. It really doesn’t matter what size needle you use as long as your gauge is correct.
