A stem of willowherb leaves travels the length of these long, cosy Fair Isle mitts. This pattern is written for Di Gilpin’s lovely marshmallow-soft Scottish lambswool yarn Lalland. Lalland is a light double knit weight.

We give both written and fully charted instructions.

We create a contrasting effect by reversing the main colour and contrast colours between the left and right mitts.

A pair of mitts uses 130m (142 yards, 37g of Lalland) in each of two colours- our main images uses the shades ‘Spring Shoots’ and ‘Crowdie’.

Tension/gauge: 30 stitches and 31 rows to 10cm measured over the k2, p1 two colour rib pattern. The rib gives a little stretch so, unless you are a particularly loose or tight knitter, these mitts should be quite forgiving of minor tension differences and fit medium adult down to teen. If you would like to increase the width of the arm section, use 3.75mm (US size 5) needles to knit the first 38 rows, then switch to the 3.25mm needles; this should increase the unstretched mitt circumference at the arm by about 1.3cm, depending on your tension.
