Both refined and rustic, the Wilmington Capelet takes us back to a time long past! I’ve named this capelet for Wilmington, North Carolina, one of the central towns in the Outlander book and television series, and I hope to have captured the heritage style made famous in this series. The capelet is worked using a chunky yarn combination, so it knits up quickly. Knit in one piece from the bottom up, it begins with a faux-cable ribbing (no cable needle necessary!). Cables continue up either side of the raglan shaping at the shoulders. The button bands repeat the body ribbing. Faux fur adds a rustic touch at the collar and along the edges of the capelet.

This pattern includes four sizes: Adult Small (32-36” chest), Adult Medium (38-42” chest), Adult Large (44-48” chest), and Adult XL (50-54)” chest.

The gauge for the primary yarn is 15 sts and 26 rows = 4” in Stockinette Stitch with smaller needle, blocked.
The gauge for the fur trim is 10 sts and 14 rows = 4” in Garter Stitch with larger needle, blocked.

This pattern is recommended for beginner to intermediate knitters. You must be able to work basic increases and decreases, as well as purlwise yarn over (YRN) technique for making eyelets.

For the capelet featured here, I used a beautiful but discontinued yarn, Reynolds Morocco (50% cotton, 50% linen, bulky weight; 104 yds/100g per hank). I love the stitch definition of this yarn, but since it is no longer available, I suggest Knit Picks Billow (100% Pima Cotton; 120 yds/100g) instead. You will need 5 (5, 5, 6) balls of Tempest #28028.You may substitute any bulky weight yarn with the proper gauge for this pattern. For the fur trim, I used Knit Picks Fable Fur (100% Polyester; 71 yds/100g) in Mishka #27939. You will need 1 ball for all sizes. You will also need 32” circular needles in size US 8 and 13, or whatever size necessary to obtain the gauge for each yarn. Finally, you will need 3 decorative buttons, 3/4” in diameter.
