Light, oversized, free flowing tops and sweaters are the perfect summer garments: Great for layering when it gets chilly, but also nice to wear in the sunshine. Like the windtowers on Middle Eastern buildings and large summer dresses, they allow for air to circulate inside the walls of fabric, giving some natural ventilation.

Windcatcher is a simple looking top with a little bit of extravagance in the form of a lace panel at one side. It is mainly worked flat, top down as well as sideways: First stitches are cast on for the neckline, from which increasing shapes the two thirds of the body worked in plain stockinette stitch. Then stitches are picked up along the sides of the work, in order to work the lace pattern for the remainder of the body. A narrow ribbing is added to the armhole edges to finish it all. Choose a light and drapey yarn for this top, and it will become your favorite summer garment!

Yarn: Holst Garn Coast (55% Merino, 45% Cotton), 350 meters / 383 yards per 50g, 4-5-6-6-7-8 skeins. Yarn is held double throughout, so it can be substituted by a corresponding yarn of 350 meters / 383 yards per 100g, of which about half the yardage is needed.
Colorway: “Begonia”
Approximate meterage / yardage needed (Holst Garn Coast or similar yarn, held double): 1370-1560-1770-1980-2230-2580 meters / 1510-1720-1950-2180-2450-2840 yards.

Needles: 4 mm / US 6 circulars, 80 cm / 32 inches, in order to accommodate a large number of sts.
Extra needle of the same size (can be a double pointed needle) for three needle bind off.
3,5 mm / US 4 circulars, 60 cm / 24 inches, for neckline and bottom rib.
optional: same size double pointed needles for sleeve rib (unless you are working the magic loop method).

Other: 4 stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge: Sample uses gauge of 19 sts & 29 rows to 10 cm / 4 inches in lace stitch pattern, 18,5 sts & 29 rows to 10 cm / 4 inches in stockinette stitch. All gauge measurements are after blocking.

Size: XS-S-M-L-XL-2XL, to fit bust of 74-84-94-104-114-124 cm / 29-33-37-41-45-49 inches. Garment is intended to be worn with around 20-40 cm / 8-16 inches of positive ease.
