Shawl 3 in the Mythplaced series, based on the work of Herbert Niebling.

Windflower is a textured lace & mesh semicircular shawl with botanical and architectural elements evocative of other times & places. The design begins with detailed anemones (also called windflowers), enclosed by an arch of hydrangea leaves opening into intricate lilies.

  • The design is charts only, with many notes, and the early rows have been written out to help you get underway.
  • Most of the test knits used more than 1200m (1300y) of lace weight, or over 1500m (1600) of fingering weight.
  • The pattern is one main size. Extra wedges can be added to make more than a half circle, and the edging can be repeated to soak up a little extra yardage. The depth could also be increased by using a heavier yarn.
  • The design suits lace to fingering weight yarn, of solid, semi solid, or gradient colouring.

The shawl is named for the anemones of Niebling’s original doily design, which have been adapted here to form the beginning of the shawl.

For anyone feeling a little Mythplaced at present, this is some decadent, escapist lace for challenging times. In such times, rest and self-care become doubly important, so a little dive into a distant world of really engaging lace can help provide some down time in amidst the madness.

Hence an Otherwhere/Otherworldly series; Broceliande, Odenwald, Ker Ys, Lyonesse… Places of myth & legend, laces drawn from the phenomenal Herbert Niebling.
