Despite the late afternoon hour and the winter month, it felt good to be outside. The sun’s apricity warmed everything as its powerful rays broke through the thin, lingering mist. Now long gone, yesterday’s canopy of clouds had been chased away by the lively brightness of a warm westerly wind. It carried a diffuse thaw in its gentle arms up and over the rolling fields. It was the kind of day that made her wonder if she’d been missing out this entire time, locked away in her cozy house with the radiators running. Perhaps the cold wasn’t as biting as she’d previously believed. Each step across the hill was soggy and she chortled as she gleefully darted across it, trying to get to the cliff overlooking the water without her shoes soaking through. Each step bringing her closer. She squinted, taking in the brilliant sunlight streaming through the treetops, glazing everything in its path with liquid gold. At water’s edge, she opted to settle into a small patch of long-dried wildflowers to watch the sunset. Snugging her hat down over her ears, she sat quietly as time trailed away, watching the sky fade to a pale amethyst before returning home- vowing once again to spend more time outdoors.

This hat is worked in the round from the top down using a standard sock cast on to create a ridge at the crown. Special shaping creates a slightly nontraditional silhouette, balanced by traditionally cozy stitch patterns. Pattern is both charted and fully written with two stitch options.
