THE INSPIRATION

I designed the Winnie Beanie back in 2017 when the messy bun beanie originally went viral. I love how the beautiful textures of the different stitch patterns play together, but my favorite thing about this pattern is how quickly it works up - it takes less than 2 hours! It’s also a lot of fun to crochet, and the finished product is absolutely stunning.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Crocheted in the round from the top down, this pattern features detailed written instructions and several helpful photo tutorials to help you along the way. It’s perfect for those who are beginner to intermediate crocheters who want to expand their horizons and learn new stitches! All you need to know is how to work the double crochet stitch and I will show you how to do the rest. It’s all very easy! The pattern includes instructions for a regular slouchy beanie, a messy bun beanie, and I also show you how to change colors for unlimited options.

THE YARN

I used Lion Brand Landscapes when I initially created this design, but the solid colors that I used here have since been discontinued. Caron Simply Soft has a beautiful sheen to it that would make it a great substitute. If you want to stick with the single-ply aspect of the yarn, I would recommend Manos del Uruguay Maxima, available online from Stars Hollow Yarns - my local yarn shop.

MATERIALS

  • Approx 120-140 yards (110-128 m) worsted weight (4) yarn for the solid version, or about 60-70 yards (55-64 m) of each color for the two-color version.

  • US size K (6.5mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge

  • Tapestry needle

MEASUREMENTS

Approx 8” (20 cm) tall and 22” (56 cm) around.

GAUGE

12 sts x 10 rows = 4” in double crochet - back loop only
