The Winter Folk cowl features a robust, textured lace that works up well in handspun and/or rustic, natural wools. It’s a cozy finished piece and a pretty enjoyable knit. (I’ve made three so far!)

If you have a strong preference to work in either worsted weight or lightweight yarns, no worries - you can knit at least two distinct versions of this from one set of brief written instructions.

The worsted-weight original is knit to fit as a loose cowl that doubles as a capelet/shoulder warmer, but with some simple alterations (included), this set of instructions will make:

-the original cowl-capelet (which can be sized up; those mods are included)
-a lightweight, closer-fitting cowl for a more delicate look
-a closer-fitting worsted-weight cowl (less elegant drape, but you may find it warmer at the neckline)

Samples are shown in Malabrigo Mechita (Sand Bank), Mouse Army Handspun (deep blue handspun), and Malabrigo Worsted (Polar Morn colorway). This pattern is a great way to show off a subtle handspun or hand-painted yarn– it’s interesting enough to keep you engaged while you knit, but not so busy that the nuances of the yarn are lost in the lace.

There are two gauges offered, to go with the two yarn weights - gauge is approximately 13 sts./21 rows over 4” for the worsted weight version, and 16 sts./29 rows over 4” for the lightweight cowl. Your knitting style and tension may vary! With this and any other pattern, please swatch and use the needles that work for you.

Thanks for looking! I hope you enjoy this pattern.
