Pansy (Viola wittrockiana)
The pansy gets its name from the french word “penser” which means “to think.” Because of this, the pansy is a symbol of free thinking and being
considerate.

I made my shawl with hand dyed yarn in a beautiful purple color. When I started looking for a name I came across the flower
Pansy (Viola Wittrockiana) and I loved the colors, but I loved the description even more. Free thinking and being considerate! How nice is that?
So that is how this pattern got it’s name.

And the free thinking part comes back into the design too. Because this fun pattern is highly adaptable. You can choose on which row you start pattern 1 or pattern 2. Just keep in mind that you always start the pattern on a knit row. And the pattern doesn’t always start on row 1, but can start on row 3 or row 5. It’s very easy to see as only the last knitted stitches are different.
Between the sections you just knit the stockinette pattern of two rows.
Because I don’t like throwing you into the deep, specially if you are a new knitter I’ll provide you with my ‘recipe’ for the shawl. Are you feeling adventurous then just go ahead and start your own unique recipe! I love to see what you come up with.
I think it will also look great as a gradient shawl. Or knitted with two skeins to get a really big shawl. The options are endless.

My finished shawl measures 150x70 cm with one skein used. It’s very easy to make it bigger or smaller if you wish.
If you want to start one of the two patterns on a different row than stated in the recipe keep in mind that the pattern should be started on a knit row and will not always start on the first row of that pattern. Because the differences are at the end of the row you are knitting this is not a
problem, just look at how to finish the row you are knitting.
