“The Mountain is Out” is a familiar refrain if you live anywhere where you can see Mount Rainier. It looms over the Puget Sound. Go a little closer and you realize the Wonderland Trail is an approximately 93-mile trail that circumnavigates the entire mountain.

It’s a goal for many to hike this strenuous trail. If through-hiking (carrying gear and camping), most take a week or more. It’s also a dream goal for trail runners to run this trail. The fastest trail runners can do this 93-mile trail in about 24 hours. Either way, you become very familiar with the up and down and up and down nature of the trail as you climb and descend ridges and cross rivers taking in the stunning terrain, glaciers, forests, and meadows along the way.

I joined a group of runners to run/hike this trail. In preparation, I ended up studying the elevation chart. Eventually I realized I would have to make a hat based on the elevation chart to commemorate this amazing trail.

Hat Basics
This slouchy hat is knit in the round from the bottom up. Fingering or light fingering yarn is used. You should be familiar with stranded knitting, reading charts, maintaining color dominance and locking floats. Charts are provided with both a light background and a dark background.

This pattern has not been tech edited nor test knit except by me. I welcome any input on this pattern.
