It’s been 10 years since I designed and taught the original Year-Long Afghan. During those 10 years, I’ve thought a lot about the original YLA and what I would do differently if I were to design a new one. So, it’s time for an update!

Each month, beginning in June 2014, I will add a project (chapter) to the e-book. That project will typically be a page or two long and will contain the instructions for that month’s square. NOTE: I am also teaching this afghan as a class at River Knits in Lafayette, IN. The instructions available here will not contain the in-person instruction or detailed handouts enjoyed by those who paid for and are attending the class. That said, it is still an excellent way to learn new skills! When a particularly unique or complicated skill is required, the pattern will list resources and links to helpful books, articles, or websites. Specific release dates for each square are listed on the information sheet, available immediately upon purchase of the pattern.

While working the Year Long Afghan 2, you will learn a specific set of skills while working each square. Each month, the squares build on each other to increase your skills and create an afghan. YLA2 consists of 13 installments: 12 afghan squares plus assembly and finishing instructions.

This pattern is designed for knitters of all skill levels, but experience with charts is encouraged. Because the skills featured in each square build on one another, it’s an excellent way to expand your knitting repertoire. Each square is only 14”, so material and time investment in each square is fairly small. This afghan is also fun for more advanced knitters who may want to expand their skills a bit and end up with a gorgeous afghan.

This pattern is written for 6 colors, but you may use as few as 2 or as many as you like.

Yarn used for sample afghan:
Cascade 220:
7814 Chartreuse (524 yds + 100 yards for assembly, 3 skeins)
8910 Citron (292 yds, 2 skeins)
9467 Delphinium (348 yds, 2 skeins)
7808 Purple Hyacinth (389 yds + 440 yards for edging, 4 skeins)
7824 Jack O’lantern (493 yds, 3 skeins)
Schachenmayr SMC Northern Wool (discontinued):
1737 Lavender (A good substitute for this color is Cascade 220 8912, Lilac Mist.) (327 yds, 2 skeins)

Total yardage for sample afghan: 2913 yards.

Many of the squares are charted. When charts are used, no line-by-line written instructions are given.
