The Yps dress is a cute kids’ dress, easy to style and easy to wear. The name Yps is short for Ypsilon (the German word for the letter “Y”) and it’s part of the Yps Capsule Collection.
The construction is unique, starting with the upper back, then working short rows for the upper back triangle, next you work the shoulders separately in garter stitch with faux i-cord edges, join them again and work the upper front triangle, before joining in the round again and adding some underarm cast-on sts.
You then work the A-shaped dress top down in the round in stockinette stitch, with increases every few rounds. Pockets are worked separately and added to the dress later, before you bind off using an i-cord bind off.
You can work a cropped version to get a summery tunic style.

EASE
-->Sizing is a guide only and you should pick the finished measurement size closest to the child’s measurements
plus 0-5 cm (0-2 inches) of positive ease. As children grow quickly, you can’t go wrong with knitting a larger size!

NEEDLES

GAUGE
20 sts x 29 rounds / rows = 10x10 cm (4x4 inches) in stockinette stitch, blocked
20 sts x 36 rows (= 18 ridges) = 10x10 cm (4x4 inches) in garter stitch, blocked

METRES NEEDED
For a single-colour dress (incl. pockets) you need around:
170 (220, 270, 310, 360) 430 (510, 610, 720, 850) m
(190 (240, 295, 340, 395) 470 (560, 670, 790, 930) yds
This includes…..For 1 pocket you need around 14 (17, 20, 23, 27) 31 (35, 39, 44, 48) m (15 (19, 22, 25, 30) 34 (38, 43, 48, 52) yds)
So if you want to go for contrast pockets, you have to substitute this amount from the total amount once (for 1 pocket) or twice (for 2 pockets)
For a tunic version you need around:
140 (170, 210, 250, 280, 350, 410, 490, 570, 680) m
150 (190, 230, 270, 310, 380, 450, 530, 620, 740) yds

-->The amount stated is calculated generously to have enough in hand for swatching and adjustments
-->Yardage may vary a bit from knitter to knitter, yarn to yarn! Have always a bit more in stock to be on the safe side.
