In 2016 Debbie Bliss met Yusuf, a 17 year old Syrian refugee who wanted to learn how to knit because he had an idea for a hat.

His long dangerous journey from Damascus, leaving behind his family, started when he was 15 and ended up in the camp known as The Jungle in Calais. He met many volunteers there who showed him great kindness whatever their nationality, background or religion. Yusuf wanted to celebrate this by working the symbols of Peace, the Star of David, the Crescent and Star and the Cross in his hat and this is his design, the Unity Beanie.

Yusuf is now studying English, Maths and Art and Design and has a bright future but there are many refugees fleeing war torn countries living in awful conditions and without hope.

All proceeds from the sale of this pattern will go to Help Refugees.
