I love to travel. It can be to an exotic destination like the island of Zanzibar off the coast of East Africa, or it can be to the park down the street. I’m always ready for the adventure.

This shawl is designed so you can choose your own adventure, allowing you to mix and match various coordinating wave patterns in the colors you choose until you run out of yarn. Want to use the colors in a pattern? Want to roll the die an make it totally random? How you approach the journey is completely up to you.

Skills: Provisional cast-on (video tutorial at https://youtu.be/C4qohENfP2k). Skills needed will vary by motifs chosen, but can include slipped stitches, Kfb and YO increases, K2tog and SSK decreases, 1x1 cables, CDD and CDDP (video tutorial at https://youtu.be/op0nW8p-FZY).

Yarn:
3 colors fingering yarn. Recommend at least 100 g/3.5 oz skein. May use different weights if desired, though this will affect the finished size of the shawl.

Sample shown in Arkansas Yarn Company Signature Plush (fingering weight) 80% superwash wool, 20% nylon, 400 yards/366 m per 3.53 oz/ 100 g, colorways Kino Knits (red-orange), Knitting on Safari (speckle), and Zanzibar Waves (turquoise), one full skein each.

Needles:
Two US 6 (4.0-mm) circular needles to knit flat, or size needed to obtain gauge with fingering weight. Use smaller needles for finer yarn and larger needles for thicker yarn to achieve a drapey fabric.

Tools:

  • Gram scale to weigh yarn as you go
  • Tapestry needle and scissors
  • Cable needle
  • Blocking mat and wires and/or pins

Sample Blocked Gauge:
For fingering: 21 sts and 34 rows = 4”/10 cm, Motif 1 pattern, wet blocked and pinned out with blocking wires

Size:
Varies with weight, gauge, and yardage. Sample used size L cast-on and 1,044 yards/ 955 m fingering yarn and measures 19”/ 48 cm by 63.5”/ 161 cm.
