A new shawl pattern with “raked” waves inspired by Japanese temple gardens. Gravel and sand are raked into waves and ripples to suggest flowing water in a landscape.
The knitted wave motifs are made with pleats, creating a reversible fabric with an embossed texture and bouncy drape. The waves appear as shadows and highlights, changing with the direction of light. The right side and wrong side of the fabric are not quite identical: the decreases are more visible on the right side, and the wrong side has slightly smoother curves. The knitting stitches are straightforward, however you need to pay attention at the start to get the pattern established!
Knit on 4mm/US6 needles with 1130yds/1050m of Holst Garn Supersoft 100% wool yarn. I used four beige and gray shades from stash: Almond, Nougat, Oatmeal and Pussy Willow.
I would ideally work the pattern in just one shade for a more minimal look - if beige or gray are not your favorite colors, it can be knit in any shade you like! Or in a gradation of similar shades.
The pdf includes a chart and full written pattern with notes and instructions and images.
