The Zöllner Shawl was designed after a trip to an illusion museum in Keswick, UK. I was drawn to the movement within the geometric illusions, especially the Zöllner illusion – how the lines move your eye through the pattern in an almost dizzying way and seem to be distorted by their background. Lines that are parallel appear to be no longer parallel!

The Zöllner Shawl is triangular and asymmetrical and has reversible twisted stitches throughout.

Size: Longest side of triangle (hypotenuse) 158cm (62”). Height from longest side to right angled corner 73cm (29”).

Gauge: 29 sts and 29 rows = 10cm (4”) in 1 stitch wide reversible twist stitch on 3.5mm needles after blocking.

Materials needed: My sample was knit in Seide/Baby camel lace by Spinnwebstube (65% Silk 35% Baby camel) 800m/100g (875yds/3.53oz). I used 87g.

Unfortunately this yarn has been discontinued but can easily be substituted for a different lace weight yarn of similar grist (weight per length). A couple of suggestions have been made in the pattern, please check your gauge before starting so you don’t risk running out of yarn.

Needles: Size 3.0mm (US 2.5) and 3.5mm (US 4.0) min 80cm (30”) in length circular lace needles.

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers.
