Zumbrella
✨ Launch weekend special: Get Zumbrella at 15% off from August 1st–2nd! ✨
Meet Zumbrella — a spiraling, leaf-fringed shawl that curls in on itself like a little garden caught mid-bloom. Four crescent-shaped modules build outward from the center, each one framed with a row of playful, dimensional leaves along the outer edge.
Zumbrella was originally designed for Dibadu Funnies Simply Delicate, worked with two strands held together to create a fingering weight fabric — but the pattern works beautifully with any yarn weight you love. There’s no need to knit or calculate a gauge swatch; simply choose a needle that gives your fabric a nice drape.
Four versions in one pattern:
Petite shawlette — Module A only
Shawlette — Modules A + B
Shawl — Modules A + B + C
Large shawl — all four modules, A through D
Every module is knitted directly onto the selvedge stitches of the previous one, so there is no seaming involved. The leaves are picked up along the outer edge and worked as you go.
I knitted two versions of Zumbrella:
Version 1 — Dibadu Funnies Simply Delicate
Lila I for Modules A + C, Lila II for Modules B + D, with Grün I and Grün II for the leaves. I used a little over 3.5oz/100g of the leaf yarn.
Finished measurements: 54.5”/138cm wingspan, 9”/23cm depth
Version 2 — Schoppel Zauberball Cotton
“Arbeiterklasse” for the modules and “Frühlingsanfang” for the leaves.
Finished measurements: 63.5”/161cm wingspan, 16.5”/27cm depth
Yarn Requirements
for fingering yarn - provided your swatch matches mine:
Large, all 4 modules + leaves:
Yarn A (modules A + C): 438yds/400m — 3.5oz/100g
Yarn B (modules B + D): 438yds/400m — 3.5oz/100g
Yarn C (leaves): 464yds/424m — 3.74oz/106g
Medium, 3 modules + leaves
Yarn A (modules A + C): 438yds/400m — 3.5oz/100g
Yarn B (module B): 158yds/144m — 1.41oz/40g
Yarn C (leaves): 350yds/320m — 2.82oz/80g
Small, 2 modules + leaves
Yarn A (module A): 150yds/136m — 1.2oz/34g
Yarn B (module B): 158yds/144m — 1.41oz/40g
Yarn C (leaves): 250yds/228m — 2.01oz/57g
Petite, 1 module + leaves
Yarn A (module A): 150yds/136m — 1.2oz/34g
Yarn C (leaves): 158yds/144m — 1.23oz/36g
Swatch: 12 sts x 28 rows = 5cm/2” in garter stitch. If your swatch matches mine, the above yardage will be a reliable guide for your project. If your gauge is different, or if you knit with a different yarn weight, your actual yarn consumption may vary — knitters with a looser gauge in particular may want to plan for a bit of extra yarn, especially for the leaves.
Needles: US 2–3mm, 40” circular
Notions: Crochet hook B/2.25mm, safety pin stitch markers
Techniques: Short rows with wraps, crochet cast-on (plus an alternative crochet cast-on), and knitting a stitch together with a selvedge stitch — all covered in step-by-step photo tutorials at the end of the pattern
Instructions: Provided in both written and charted form
