ZZ's Welted Hat, aka; That Bad Girl Hat
Something different in a knit hat! (Knit sidewards)
Welts along with short row shaping give this hat a unique look.
It’s easy to do, there are no circular needles required. Just cast on and work it flat. The only stitches you need to know are knit and purl with an occasional stitch slipped, that is a stitch moved over with out knitting or purling it and a wrapped stitch, (that’s not nearly as difficult as it sounds, honestly). The finished hat will have the stretch of a nice ribbed stocking hat but with a more sophisticated look when done in pastels or a more “bad assed” or biker girl look when done in black, beige/brown or navy. Guys like this hat in black#, gray, royal or navy blue.
I must mention, working with black yarn is absolute murder on my eyes. The shadows are indiscernible as they are all black on black and the direction of the yarn, ie; horizontal or vertical, can not be determined with in a stitch. I’d use navy, charcoal, dark brown, anything but black for me …
Go ahead, cast this hat on. You’ll love the end result.
WARNING The making of hats with this pattern may be habit forming. You could wind up with a whole drawer full of them so be prepared to share these hats with friends and family.
Trust the pattern, work it to the next section section to watch it take it’s shape. Short row shaping is a technique that looks strange if you have never tried it before. If you keep going, the belly will form to shape the crown. You will be pleased with your end result.
