Lord of the Rings-inspired TIbetan supported spindle
This Tibetan style supported spindle is made from claro walnut. It is approximately 9 3/4” long and has a thin flicking tip of approximately 1/8”. The script from the One Ring is painted in gold on the whorl and it is finished with a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil. The tip is reinforced with CA glue for added durability.
The spindle utilizes a two-piece whorl that is hollowed out to make an internally balanced pod. This creates a rim-weighted spindle that is exceptionally balanced without the need for external weighting that could detract from the overall aesthetics.

The bowl in Holly from The Dancing Goats.
Bark on Holly Spindle Bowl 6 inches across…North Woods Refugia…
Aldo Leopold had a special relationship with the pine trees and was never able to adequately explain why they were such moving ecological sentinels…I feel the same way about them and have searched out the oldest and largest of their kind to try to understand their slow thoughts. A Bristlecone high on Baker peak in Nevada…1000 year old White Pines near Copper Harbor…Ancient Krummholz timber in a dozen different mountain ranges…The Giants of Rainier …Ecological witness to vast stretches of time, Pine trees watched the dinosaurs rise and fall….
Holly is rare to find and turn…A 100 year old Holly from a tree service storm cleanup will turn into many spinning tools…
North Woods Refugia has Pine trees inlaid in Turquoise and Malachite Matrix…and a hammered copper moon, torch fired with enamel…The spin time in these bowls is amazing.
A new item, combining my love of lapidary, especially Turquoise and wood turning.
