Going to start these tomorrow!
April 13th Cast on. What fun yarn! Started on size 1 needle but realized at about 3/4 of an inch into it that the stitches were too small. Instead of frogging and starting over, I’m going to switch to a size 2. If it looks strange, I’ll begin again.
Considering this project takes about 100 stitches to make a square inch, it will take considerably longer than anything else I’ve made to date.
April 14th Okay. So, I frogged and started over. The size 2 needles worked best and I’ve got spot on stitch gauge. Since this pattern is adjustable for row gauge, I’m well on my way. Got the toe increases done and start the pattern stitches on the instep tonight.
April 18th
I think sweaters go faster.
I messed up something on one of the heels a little bit… I picked up the RS wraps wrong so I have a few twisted stitches and I ended up with 32 instead of 30 stitches somehow. I didn’t dare rip it back with these little stitches; I was terrified I’d end up not being able to pick up all of them and have to start all over again, so I just plowed on.
The second heel turned out perfectly. They’re still absolutely wearable and although knowing there are mistakes bugs me, I’m just leaving it like it is. Next ones will be perfect, right? Chalk it up to learning! I’m still pretty pleased that after only 3 and a half months of learning, I can already do socks!
I worked all weekend on these and I still have about 5” left to go on the leg (total of nine or ten inches; whatever I can get out of this hank). This is going to take forevvvvvvver… and yet, I’m still really enjoying the process.
April 22nd Finally finished and used a sewn bind off.
I could have been happier with these overall, but there was quite a bit of pooling during the gusset increases in addition to the heel mistakes. That said, I must admit that these are the most comfy socks I’ve ever owned… if only because the heel isn’t halfway up my leg. I don’t think I’ll use a variegated yarn again for socks (besides using the hank I already have) just because of the pooling problem, but I’m pleased with the fact that I’ve actually been able to accomplish such a “fitted” garment!
