Notes

Decided to do this project from Handwoven Summer 2024. Using spirit yarn that came mostly from Hartnell’s dead weaving program.

First warp: This is the warp for what will become the chenille “yarn.” I used leftovers of carpet warp, crochet cotton, and a couple cones of similar sized cotton or cottolin. Based on comments from Kelli11’s project I avoided white in my warp (although I did use an old stained beige crochet cotton ball when I ran out of all my darker colors). The warp will show a little on the edges of the rug so I think the colors I chose will blend in with my weft yarns.

I made a 5 yard warp that is about 31” wide. I used a 12 dent reed, 4 ends per dent for two dents and then 10 empty dents. The original pattern called for a 15 dent reed, but I just used the 12 dent that I had. So my sett is slightly different.
Threaded all the threads individually as 4 shaft tabby. Can’t wait to get this wound on and get started! It’s already a stash buster just with the first warp!

Soaked and drained the finished pad of chenille since it was so dusty. Hung to dry and then cut up strips. I got two large balls (strips ended up about 10 feet long.)

I had more yarn to use up (go figure! lots of stash joy) so I warped for a second set of chenille strips. This part is almost done. This set of strips is using up some of the mohair stash from Hartnell weaving program. It has a little bit of a brighter feel than the very neutral strips in the first batch.

Started winding the warp for the rugs tonight. I am putting on enough for three rugs plus loom waste for cutting one or two of them off the loom before the warp is finished. I know that the thickness of the rug will challenge my fabric beam. So I’m prepared to have to cut them off as I go. It will waste a little warp, but save me time.
Using Maysville 8/4 carpet warp and following the instructions in Handwoven. 6 epi and 30 inches wide on the loom, so 108 ends.

Dressed the loom and it’s ready for rug weaving tomorrow after work. 9 yards of warp but it wound on very easily since it was 6 epi.

Finished the first rug. I used the batch of chenille that was more neutral and ran out about 8” short of the planned 60”. the second rug will be with the second set of Chenille that has the red and bright green in it. I have warp for a third rug, but it looks like I’ll run out of chenille for it. So maybe I’ll resley it and use the remainder to make more Chenille. Or maybe I’ll make a flat rug using stash yarn that hasn’t been made into chenille strips.

Finished the second rug and although the chenille warp was somewhat brighter and included brighter yarns, they are surprisingly close.

Going to call this batch of rugs finished. I still have rug warp on the loom, but I ran out of chenille. I’ll do something with the leftover warp and I WILL make more chenille. But these two rugs are finished. One is in our bathroom and the other will go into the trailer kitchen area.
