TO MAKE THIS HAT:

Knit flat, not in the round.

CO 122 sts with size 5 needle. (I used the Twisted German Cast-on to make it stretchy.)

ROW 1: (WS) K1, P1, * K2, P2 * until 4 sts left, K2, P1, K1.
ROW 2: (RS) P1, K1, * P2, K2 * until 4 sts left, P2, K1, P1.

Repeat these two rows a total of 6 times.

Switch to size 6 needle and purl 1 row in red increasing 1 stitch somewhere in the hat, EXCEPT for the 1st and last stitches, which should be knit on WS rows and purled on RS rows for the remainder of the hat.

On the next row, you will be knitting the biohazard chart. To have it centered between the decreases at the top of the hat, knit 28 stitches and then begin the chart.

When you reach row 37 of the chart, you will begin to decrease.

Row 37 of chart (WS): k1, PM, p30, PM, p31, PM, p30 PM, p30, PM, k1
Row 38 of chart (RS): p1, * k2tog, knit to 2 sts before marker, ssk * repeat from * to * , ending with p1.
Row 39 of chart (WS): k1, * ssp, p to 2 sts before marker, p2tog, * repeat from * to * ending with k1.

Repeat rows 38 and 39 until 9 sts remain. Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts. Seam.

This creates rather sharp decreases, but otherwise the hat is too long . This keeps the the biohazard symbol neatly between the decreases.

CHANGE TO DECREASES

When you reach row 41 of the chart, you will begin to decrease.

Row 41 of chart (WS): k1, PM, p30, PM, p31, PM, p30 PM, p30, PM, k1
Row 42 of chart (RS): p1, * k2tog, knit to 2 sts before marker, ssk * repeat from * to * , ending with p1.
Row 43 of chart (WS): k1, * ssp, p to 2 sts before marker, p2tog, * repeat from * to * ending with k1.

Repeat rows 42 and 43 until 9 sts remain. Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts. Seam.
