Notes

Bought the kit from Sunday Knits. Will be quite a challenge to do this!

Someone quoted Nelson Mandela to me today : “It always seems impossible until you’re done.”

I will change that to: IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL YOU START!

Yarn is beautiful. Spent my time winding it and carefully marking zip top baggies for each color. Colors are more muted than they appear in photos.
7/31 took a few tries before I got the cast on right. Then I dove right in! Cast all my doubts aside. I love doing fairisle. The increases and color changes are a challenge. I am using Knit Companion to help me keep track because it seems much easier than printed pages for this. Lots of markers and carefully checking each row helps. The Russian splice for changing yarns really helps. I realized half way through, that Carol says you can just tie the color changes at steek since they are going to be cut anyway.
8/7: Was confused last night about the next step after finishing center chart. Tried drawing it out, and finally understood. See photo.
8/29 : chart D finished. 104 hours 43 minutes.
Did crochet steek. Watched many videos, but this one is best:

Suzanne Bryan is so good at explaining things.
PATTERN ERRORS? I believe rows 4 and 5 of bottom edges, side 1 are incorrect. I emailed the designer and she says seed stitch should continue.

Picking up stitches for border: I am making the large version. Pattern says pick up 421. I did the math and came up with 376. ( I had 378, probably because I picked up an extra on each edge.) I was alarmed at the 45 stitch difference, so did the math over and over, doubting myself. Hope it looks ok when finished.
Here’s the math:
Chart A 56 rows
Chart B 56 rows
Chart c: 56 rows
Chart D:42 rows
————————
208 rows x2= 416 rows at PU 4 stitches every 5 rows =20% of 483= 83 stitches. 416-83= 333 stitches

center chart 53 stitches per side, PU 5 stitches every 6 rows= 18%= 9.5 stitches. 53-9.5= 43 stitches.
43 + 333=376 total stitches to pick up.

8/2: finished. Blocking and will sew down borders tomorrow.
How I sewed down the borders: https://www.mscleaver.com/chronicles/2016/5/30/foldedhem
Knit Companion says 112 hours, but I think total is maybe 30 hours more hours more since I did not have the program open for crocheting the steeks, cutting them, picking up stitches, and knitting the borders, blocking, and sewing down the borders. So 142 hours total is my estimate.
