My daughter came home after college with a Klutz Learn to Knit children’s book. She said, “Mommy, let’s try this.” My grandma was an amazing knitter, but l missed my opportunity to learn from her. My daughter gave me the ultimate gift, and now I return the favor by making her a custom creation in the colors of her choosing.

Cast on 110 on US 2’s. Continued in twisted rib 9 rows then 1 row knit. Next row knit on US 3’s increasing to 144. German short rows: knit 29, +4,+4, +4, 4. Knit leaves and flower necklace. Increased to 180 to do the scalloped color change. Increased to 240 for the large chart using all 4 colors. Increased to 306 for the 9 stitch scallops. After flowers, increased to 338. Divided for sleeves about 8” from front cast on. Stitch counts: 52 (half back) + 16; 65 arm; 104 front +16; 65 arm; 52 (1/2 back). My daughter wanted a thicker sweater, so I doubled the main color yarn after the stranded pattern stitches. Body from underarm- 13 1/2” (including about 1 1/2” of twisted rib knit on US2’s.

Picked up 4 extra stitches in each “corner” of the armhole and reduced them over the next 3 rounds. I had 76 stitches for each sleeve. After 8 1/2”, (row 72) knit one ssk. After 6 rounds knit to 3 stitches before end of round k2tog knit one. Repeated every 6 rows until I had 64 stitches. Dropped one of the light blue strands and did the leaf and flower pattern. Knit one row with 2 strands of the light blue, switched to US2’s, knit one row, then began twisted ribbing with both light blue strands.
