Starting swatching with US6. Can’t use gauge for previous sweater this yarn was intended for because that was in the round, but I can use it as a starting point. It will be an interesting experiment to see how much I row out. I’m not digging the stainless steel needles with this yarn, though, so I’ll also swatch with some wooden ones… which is another interesting comparison I haven’t done yet!
| Needle | Pre-Blocking Sts | Pre-Blocking Rows | Post-Blocking Sts | Post-Blocking Rows |
|---|
| Pattern, stockinette | n/a | n/a | 23 | 32 |
| US6, ChiaoGoo IC set, stockinette | 24.8 | 31.5 | 23.2 | 34 |
| US6 (1 YO), KnitPicks IC set, stockinette | 24.6 | 30.7 | 22.5 | 32.6 |
Using the wooden KP needles because they were nicer to knit this yarn with. Used stainless CG shortie set for neck since the KP set can’t go down to 16”.
Debating on sizing. The 34 ends up with no ease, which is what the pattern calls for, but that will be too tight at the hips and I was wanting a bit of positive ease. But the 38 ends up bigger at the bust than I’d ideally like, even though the hip circumference is great. Oh, how I miss CustomFit!
I’ll just go with size 38 everywhere to not have to re-math it all out to be between 34 and 38, especially the armscye and sleeve cap shaping.
- Tillybuddy’s Very Stretchy Cast On (front and back panels)
- Moving waist shaping to be at edges of cable panel on front and back panels (aka CustomFit shaping)
- Shortening bodice by 1” for a more cropped sweater
- Modifying shoulder stepped bind offs to be short rows; placing on waste yarn; 3 needle bind off to seam front and back panels (see also Nancie M. Wiseman’s The Knitter’s Book of Finishing Techniques)
- Italian Tubular Cast On (sleeves); 2 rows (4 half-rows) setup before switching to 2x2 rib
- Lengthening sleeves (20” from cast on to start of cap shaping); casting on fewer stitches and adding increases in the additional length
- Realized during last repeat of sleeves that I’m doing the left twist incorrectly - guess it’s a design choice now
- Using sloped bind off for top of sleeve caps
- Was debating changing collar, but with full length sleeves I think the turtleneck makes it an all-over cozier sweater.
- Sewing turtleneck down to keep it from rolling up too far. Has I thought ahead, I would have started with the larger needles and then switched to smaller ones to allow for seaming the collar shut on the WS with the smaller stitches on the inside. As is, I have to improvise. Take 1 - use a backstich à la this Into the Wool blog post. I may end up ripping out and re-knitting the 9” collar, we will see.
