Notes

This is a test knit. Shawl is knit from the bottom up, which meant an insane number of cast on stitches. I redid my cable cast on so it would be slightly less wonky. Turns out it wasn’t an issue once the first row was knitted, it all evened out.

Finished shawl weighs 104 grams.
Used 54 grams of white, about 240 yards
Used 50 grams of purple, about 220 yards

Sadly the “rust resistant” yellow flower pins left rust stains all over the edges. I have a few methods to try to remove them. If they don’t work I will crochet over the edges in purple and cover them up.

In an attempt to remove the rust stains through soaking a corner, I neglected to add vinegar to the water. This resulted in the purple yarn bleeding all over the snowy white. I rinsed and washed it for 3 days, hoping to either fade the initial bleed or at least even out the blotches so it was consistent all the way across. I also ordered Synthropol. The Synthropol didn’t seem to really make much of a difference to me, but at the end the blotches are mostly gone. The white is now a very pale blue, which I guess is better than it was. The rust stains are still very evident, perhaps even more evident than they were before.

4/13 Rit Color Remover is powerful stuff, let me tell you. I mixed one packet in a plastic mix bowl with about a quart of hot water. I was able to just dip in the edges to nearly completely remove the bleeding. However, it significantly lightened the purple sections as well. I ended up dunking the whole thing for a about a minute or so to lighten it evenly. It worked! Except instead of having a white and blue purple shawl, it now appears to be a white and red purple shawl.
