This is my interpretation on the owl baby hat. I looked at a ton of baby hats and made something that I liked. I did buy and make one owl hat, but wasn’t very happy with the final product. After a second attempt at an improvised owl baby hat--and quickly running out of time--I came up with this design. I decided to make a “chibi” version of an owl. I think he’s cuter than the traditional owl baby hats. (^o^)
I’m still not completely happy with the design, but I think it’s the best of the three. I wanted a newborn size, but I don’t think I got there. It’s troublesome making a baby hat without the baby around…
The ears are completely my own design. The first hat I improvised, the ears were slightly longer than expected. This time around, I re-worked the pattern and I think they’re much better than the first go. In all of the patterns I studied, the ears are a flat piece, but I thought it was better to do them in the round.
The one thing I really didn’t like about most of the owl patterns out there is the beak. I have made so many of those dang triangles and haven’t been satisfied with one. I don’t know how people can make them look right. I much prefer the embroidered version. It also helps make the owl look chibi-fied.
For some reason, the back seam came out all wonky. My sister-in-law will just have to keep her kid on his back so no one can see. (>Os done is done.
