The yarn was all stash yarn- acrylic worsted weight.
I used the bottle cozy pattern, (found here) but added a few extra rows to make it a bit taller- big enough to cover a can of beer.
I used an H hook for the hat, so it was a smaller adult hat. An I hook could be used for a bigger hat.
ch=chain, sc=single crochet, slst=slip stitch, hdc=half double crochet, hdc-dec=half double crochet decrease.
Hat base, using light green:
- In a magic ring, sc, hdc 7. Do not join rounds. (8 stitches)
- 2hdc around. (16 stitches)
- (hdc, 2hdc) around. (24 stitches)
- (hdc 2, 2hdc) around. (32 stitches)
- (hdc 3, 2hdc) around. (40 stitches)
- (hdc 4, 2hdc) around. (48 stitches)
- (hdc 5, 2hdc) around. (56 stitches)
- (hdc 6, 2hdc) around. (64 stitches) 9-20. hdc around. (64 stitches)
Do not fasten off your work, now start the left ear-flap.
- hdc 16, ch 1, turn. (16 stitches)
- hdc-dec, hdc 12, hdc-dec, ch 1, turn. (14 stitches)
- hdc-dec, hdc 10, hdc-dec, ch 1, turn. (12 stitches)

Then start the right ear-flap:
Skip 11 stitches at the back of the hat and attach yarn into the 12th stitch.
- Ch 1, hdc-dec, hdc 12, hdc-dec, ch 1, turn. (14 stitches)
- hdc-dec, hdc 10, hdc-dec, ch 1, turn. (12 stitches)

- hdc-dec, hdc 2, hdc-dec, ch 1, turn. (4 stitches)
- hdc-dec 2, ch 1. (2 stitches)
Sc evenly around the bottom of hat and the earflaps in light green to make a nice border. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Use the dark green and crab stitch around the hat and ear-flaps to give a contrasting edge.
Cut nine 1m lengths of yarn for each braid. Use a hook to pull through the bottom 2 stitches of each ear-flap. Divide the yarn into 3 sections, each consisting of 6 strands. Braid to desired length (I did about 4 inches). Tie with a a knot. Trim the ends. Repeat for the other side of the hat.
I used a foam head to place the hat on, so I could position the cozy properly to sew it on.
I cut down a plastic water bottle and put it inside of the cozy to help it keep it’s shape. I then tucked a bit of fibre-fill into the cup so it looked like beer froth. I added white pipe-cleaner to the handle to help it keep it’s shape.
