I was looking for a unisex gift for a family gift exchange and this lovely was a store sample at Mockingbird Moon.

Yay: The yarn was super yummy and (after I figured it out) the smocking/ ribbing was super quick.
Boo: The original mistakes I made in the smocking made me want to throw it down (since one mess up equals lots of tinking), but persistence (coupled with actually reading the pattern) won out. Also, after finishing I’m reconsidering this as a “unisex” pattern. Though nothing in it screams “girl!” the overall fluffiness lends itself to a more feminine hat. However, it does fit like a true beanie which ups the masculine factor in my opinion. (Does a hat really need a gender?)
Just saying: if I were the pattern namer I would have gone with “the DNA hat” or am I the only person who sees the double helixes?
