I’ve had this orange rug yarn in my donation stash for a while. It finally had to come out to play. I knew I wanted to make a pumpkin hat but was unhappy with the patterns I saw. So I improvised borrowing this and that from here and there.
The rug yarn seemed a little scratchy so I found this softer variegated fall colors ball that I thought would work well for the brim that goes over the ears and touches the face. There was enough to make the brim with the teeniest bit left. The brim can be folded up to shorten the hat.
For the body of the hat, I knitted 3 then purled 3 until I thought it was big enough. It gave more of the puff and valley look of a real pumpkin.
To add the stem and to close the hat I followed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_28...

I think it turned out cute. Still, rug yarn is too scratchy for most folks I would think. I added the last bit of the fall variegated as the blend to the greenery at the top.
