Gave up trying to do this on one needle, it’s gotten too confusing. The directions are too ambiguously set out in the Oaks book. I found another book that has clearer instructions. (2009-01-07)

Finally finished! Thought this project would never end. Going down to two stitches per needle on the toe side was too tight for me with the size needles the Oaks book recommended so I followed another book’s directions which more reasonably went down to four stitches per needle.

Also, I ended up purling the entire heel and gusset decreases, kicking myself & wondering why I couldn’t just knit like everyone else. I finally realized that it was because somewhere along the line my work had gotten turned inside out and I was knitting counter clockwise instead of clockwise! LOL. After I reversed direction, I found I was able to knit the rest of the sock.

I am pretty sorry I got the Oaks book, though. It’s not a good enough book for someone’s first knitting project. ’I Can’t Believe I’m Knitting Socks’ written by Cynthia Guggemos explains everything thoroughly enough for even someone who has never knitted anything before. It also shows the two-at-a-time method.
