This is a very special project for me. When my grandmother passed away I received the buttons from my great aunts WWII nurses uniform. This full collection of button includes those for the epaulet, the words Canada and the maple leaf. I wanted to put the buttons to good use so looked long and hard for a pattern with the right look to pay homage to the look and feel of the uniform but also something modern I would want to wear. This sweater with the decorative double breasted buttons fit exactly what I was looking for and I’m excited to finally cast it on. I’ve had the yarn for sometime and haven’t really gotten going on this project.

I originally cast on the back for this sweater in 2016. I didn’t spend the time to check gauge, finished the whole back and it wasn’t going to fit. I knew I had to take it out but was disheartened. Finally today I bit the bullet, pulled the whole back out and spent the day gauging. The yarn I am using does not fit the patterns gauge so I’ve found a needle size that works and I will be following the pattern for one size larger than I require.

I have finished the back and decided to block it first on its own to be sure about the gauge. I may actually have the opposite problem and I may have made it slightly too large but I was able to pin it as close as I could to the right size. Hopefully once it’s dry it sits right. I’ve started on the front and almost have the first round of the chart complete. It’s coming along nicely.

I have started the front of the sweater and have a completed one repeat of the cable chart. It’s going well so far, a little slow going.

I had put this project aside for a little bit while I worked on a summer knit and test knit. I got back into it this weekend and was able to complete two additional repeats of the cable pattern. I am now almost ready to begin the arm hole decreases. Still making good progress and I hope (fingers crossed) to wear it this winter.
