The idea of using two different types of wool and a gold spool came from a decorative candle holder pattern, which I never ended up knotting. I then thought, it would look good in a scarf, so looked at different pattern ideas.

In the end, I used the following pattern which I saw in similar cable scarves:

Cast on 30 stitches (use all three strings as one) on number 6 needle.

8 rows of alternating :
KK KK PP KK KK KK PP KK PP KK KK KK PP KK KK
KK PP KK PP PP PP KK PP KK PP PP PP KK PP KK
..
..
On each 1st row after that, stitch 7,8,9 are knitted after 10,11,12 (cable stitch) to get the cable effect and have the stitches cross over. The same is true for 19,20,21 and 22,23,24.

Not very professionally explained, but it is not too difficult, even without a cable stitch needle - I used a spare short double sided needle I had.
