Notes

This pair of socks was part of my ‘working out the best fit socks for my feet’ project during 2021.

I knit a vanilla sock and used the umbrella heel from Kay Jones’ Umbrella Sock pattern.

For some reason I knit two different toes - an umbrella toe from above pattern and a standard wedge toe. But this ‘design feature’ was useful to work out length of different toes and how much knitting is required in between heel and toe.

What I have learned:

  1. I like the fit of a 60 stitch vanilla sock better than a 64 stitch. However I would increase the stitch count to 64 for the umbrella heel / toe.
  2. Gauge on 2.25mm needles for standard sock yarn is 9 stitches / inch.
  3. An umbrella toe takes 2.25”
  4. A standard wedge toe takes 1.75”
  5. When knitting an umbrella heel and toe I need 5” (which is about 60 rounds) of knitting in between. For a standard wedge toe I need about 63 rounds.

Yarn used: main skein 25g / mini 14g
