I have decided to make this round shawl a skirt.

To start, I measure around the widest part of my lower body (hips and back side) that the skirt will need to fit over. Mine is about 41.5 inches. Then I check project gauge and do the math to see what number I need to cast on.

Stated gauge for this design is 20 stitches = 4 inches, which is 5 sts per inch, giving me a cast-on number of 41.5 x 5 = 207.5. If my gauge is a little off, I don’t really worry. Elastic at the waist will make it fit.

Usually, I do a provisional cast-on, knit a few centimeters in St stitch flat, join in the round and knit twice as many rnds needed for width of waistband, fold in half, and work one round knitting together each working stitch with a provisional stitch, folding the waistband with knit side showing to make waistband casing for elastic (since I knit the first part flat, there is now a neat slit in which to insert elastic), and then join for round and knit one round.

So I will join the pattern at the point when the stitch count is about where my cast-on number is. Lace Band 1 is a rep of 8 stitches. 26 repeats of 8 is 208.

For the next band, I will ignore pattern’s increase instructions and increase evenly to get to 320. Then I am on track for the rest of the pattern.

Using 3.25 mm needle because I don’t have a 3 mm long enough.

Inserted the elastic into the waistband so I can try on the skirt as I knit down.

Chart D is worked flat, but in the chart legend, only one symbol instructs what to do on RS and WS. So it seems like you don’t reverse stitches for other symbols—except I think that you have to.So a purl is worked as knit on wrong side, etc., even though legend does not say that.

Done with spokes! Barber cord made the transferring of stitches from held to working and back to held sooooo easy and fast.

Now that I have done the colorwork, I think I like it better plain than with the lace overlay! But too late for that!

I am on Chart G. The initial symbol of the RS rows of the chart is not defined. Maybe sl wyib?

Aha! I found the symbol in a chart in the pattern CBS, and it is sl wyib.
