Notes

Used leftover yarns of medium weight; mainly dk or worsted. We used medium to large tea towels that are cut in half and hemmed on a sewing machine. Fold sides in to meet at centre back. Using double thickness then blanket stitch across top with yarn, being sure to do an extra stitch at each folded edge, so the next row comes right to the edge.

First row single crochet between blanket stitches at top. Fasten off at far edge and work in loose end. Start second row with new yarn; double crochet across, with decreasing at edges.

The above directions are for the first versions of these towels that I made (last photos). Since then I have varied the crochet stitches used in the toppers, including adding a granny-square stitch (triple crochet alternating across row with three chain stitches; on following row put triple crochets above chain stitch parts; and vice versa chain stitches above triple crochet stitches), decreasing on sides to width wanted for hanger.

If more decreases are needed do across rows for all stitches with a single crochet at the top between each decrease. This gives a lacey pattern, which you can then do double crochet decreases on each side.

Once a width of 8-10 stitches is reached, continue making the ‘neck’ until sufficient length is reached. End with a button hole stitch over two rows. Work in ends and sew on a large decorative button to fit button hole.
