Notes

Choose a main color for the background to outline all the granny squares and to sew them together, use in the rim and handles.

Remnants of worsted yarns in different shades (light, medium, and dark) of blue, yellow/gold, purple and orange/red were made into the first 3-rows for 21 granny squares. Each square is made of 4 rounds in coordinating colours (to make smaller bags decrease the number of rounds.) After all squares done do a final round around each square in the same coordinating background colour.

Finished squares measure approx 5 1/4 inches on the side. Sew squares into a rectangle 3 sq wide x 7 sq long. Double crochet side-panel rectangles in black, 1 sq wide x 3 sq long. Alternatively you can make two side panels with an additional 6 squares -panels are each one square wide x 3 squares long.

Sew side panels and fold granny square rectangle to make a bag. Single crochet a rim & double crochet handles and linings to fit. Join handles and linings with a single crochet stitch using a contrast yarn (I used medium blue). Sew lined handles to front and back of bag. Add large decorative buttons on each handle.

For the extra-large size tote (1.5 m x 0.45 m), add another row to each square before putting the main-colour background borders around each square.
