A variety of Aran-weight yarns, including white, amethyst, orange-red, yellow, turquoise, lime, magenta, pink, and orange, were used to make 14 granny squares. A mix of colour combinations were used to crochet 4 rounds for each square, using double crochet. Each square was then rimmed in a white double crochet border. Squares were sewn together, according to the layout photographed. Sides were sewn together to make the bag. A top border of about an inch high was made using white in rows of single crochet, with the final two rounds in amethyst. Two Straps were made from amethyst yarn, in double crochet; 8 sts wide, to desired length. Straps were centered and sewn in place on the front and back panels, with contrasting decorative buttons added.
For an easier bag, crochet 18 squares and sew into a rectangle 3 sq wide x 6 sq long. Fold in half along length and sew side seams to make bag . Crochet rim for about an inch in rounds and bind off. Make 2 handles and sew symmetrically around centre at rim. Sew on decorative buttons. The white-blue-green-purple bag with a pair of round and triangle buttons on each strap end was made this way. Lot easier (does not have side panels and
Bottom); but has a smaller volume when finished.
For a smaller bag (blue and black with short handle sewn on silver rings) make the same number of granny squares, but for each square do only three rounds per square; and for borders use background yarn (black in example) with the border stitched on each square in single crochet. Sew squares in the same pattern as larger bag and finish off the same.
