Notes

A very enjoyable, well-presented pattern.

I have a high instep and wide toe box. This pattern fits the bill. The Fleegle heel is a proven winner. I have worked the star toe before in Christmas stockings but this is my first time using it in a wearable sock. It fits my wide toe box well. Looking forward to learning if I still enjoy the toe’s fit after wearing these socks all day this coming fall.

Used the 2nd option in this pinhole cast-on tutorial by Romi Hill. It is similar to stacked stitches and is less fiddly.

Added an extra round of stockinette toe color before switching to striped colorway for foot body.

Not much guidance given for cuff. Worked 2x2 rib for 24 rounds (1 7/8”), then worked simple stretchy bind off. (Worked 1st cuff BO 3 times. First SSBO flaired, JSSBO would not go over my high instep, went back to SSBO.)

Looking back, I worked combination ribbing (eastern purls with western knits) in the cuff and in JSSBO. Perhaps JSSBO would have worked if I worked western 2x2 ribbing.

I tried these socks on a lot when making my Scrappy, shorty, strong-heel socks. I sadly realized that the feet on these socks are too long. I plan to correct the length by ripping back the toe so foot length is 8” then work a wedge toe I am familiar with for this foot length.

For next Fleegle heel socks: When to start a Fleegle heel by row gauge. This tutorial shows you how to block, check gauge, and calculate where gusset increases should start after a considerable part of the toe foot has been knit.

Compare these Fleegle heel socks to my shorty Strong heel socks using the same yarn.
