Using up stash.

Inspiration taken from a ‘life hack’ video showing someone storing onions in a nylon stocking, with knots tied between each onion. Supposed to cut off the bottom one to use that onion, and work your way up the length. Then start over with a new stocking.

Seemed wasteful to me, so thought I’d try making a reusable one.

We’ll see how it goes.

Well, looks like it worked!

How I made this:

Started by doing a provisional Cast On of 35 stitches, making sure to have a starting ‘tail’ of at least 10cm/4”.
(Might try magic loop, next time.)

Row 1: Slip 1st stitch purl-wise, YO, K2Tog to the end.

Row 2: Slip 1st stitch purl-wise, YO, P2Tog to the end.

Repeat Row’s 1 & 2 until it’s as long as you want, or until you run out of cotton - preferably with at least 10cm/4” remaining.

Thread the end-tail through the last row of stitches twice, pull tight, and fasten off.

Return to the beginning, thread the beginning-tail through the first row of stitches twice pull tight, fasten off.

I ended up having enough of one of the tails (can’t recall which, at this point!) that I could crochet a small loop at one end to hang it with.

I wanted to use beads, or simple metal rings, for the separator pieces, but couldn’t find any locally, of the correct size.
So I got some coloured craft wire, and wrapped it tightly every 16cm/6.25” (-ish, the measuring was all guesstimated,) to pinch the netting in between onions.

Next time, I may purchase some rings ahead of time, and incorporate them into the netting as I go.
…or not. smile_cat
