AKA: the “dear lord, what was I thinking?” Project. This may be too hard for me.

Using a tubular cast on with 2 setup rows (not the one with provisional stitches and stockinette, but not sure what it’s called. I’ma beginner). Starting with one sleeve to make sure I can stay in gauge and get through this. I rewrote the entire pattern with instructions row by row, because the color pattern instructions are separate from the rest of it. Make sure you read the whole thing and notate all this in a way that makes sense to you.

2/21/22 update- finished sleeve 1. The color is really hard for me. Also note: the pattern has some really confusing bits in it, once I got to the decreases the stitch counts didn’t seem to be right. For anyone trying this, there’s two decrease sections which say to do “7 times”. The first section has decreases on the RS only. The second section has decreases both on the RS and the WS. The first section adds up to 14 rows (each pairing of rs and ws is “one” time). The second section is different, and should add up to 7 rows. Many people probably read this just fine but my brain had trouble with it, so making a note here. It is super helpful to figure out what the stitch count should be at each step- they’re included in the pattern but it helped me to break them out almost row by row, or I’d have made a mess of the decreases.

I took a long break after the second sleeve, due to covid and fatigue and life… started the back piece this week. Thoughts- at 25 rows in I’m a little worried about the width. It’s narrower than I’d expect for the size I’m making, but trying to have faith after seeing the many people saying how big it came out.

For the color work I’m going to try ladderback jacquard. After the hell of catching floats on the sleeves, I can’t imagine it’s much worse and hopefully it will look cleaner, though I’m going to have to wing it for doing this on the wrong side, since all the tutorials I found are in the round.

Pattern confusion: the pattern says to give two main color selvedge stitches at the color work parts. I’m fairly certain that means taking two columns off the chart for the given size, rather than adding 4 stitches to the cast on, but it’s stated confusingly, and I think has confused some others before me. But I’m thinking I cast on 121, the color chart should be 117 wide.

Quick note- anyone who wants to do this this thing- look into ladderback jacquard- I was scared to do it, especially on 1x1 rib knit flat- but it’s SO MUCH EASIER than trying to catch floats and messing up the tension. You’ll want to catch a few floats when you have long runs of vertical lines, but otherwise? Do the ladders. I’m so much happier with how this is going now.

Back complete

Both front pieces finished. I can’t describe the joy of finishing up the color work and knowing I never have to look at those charts again! Now I just have ends, some blocking, facings and sewing :) my gauge wasn’t quite right, stitches too tall and very slightly narrow, but it should work out. I’m making my savings a little wider than called for to compensate a little, hopefully that works.

Starting collar. And so confused about where I’m supposed to pick up stitches. The pick up counts don’t seem to match the number of stitches in the different sections. My brain. It hurts. Also, after reading a few notes from others and looking at pictures I am going with a larger needle than suggested for the collar, to make it bigger with a little more drape.
