Notes

I color coded the charts according to what stitch to knit so that I don’t have to pay attention to whether I’m knitting a wrong side row or a right side row. The same symbol in the chart means different things depending on which side it’s on, but I colored all k2tog the same color and all ssk another color, regardless of the side it’s on.

I was having a terrible time figuring out where I was in the first chart’s pattern until I put stitch numbers in every stitch of the chart see photo). Then it was a breeze.

I do recommend a life line before row 1 of each repeat in the edging.

For the edging, I am using two colors of stitch markers. I place one at the beginning of each row 1 of the pattern and change colors after 10. That way I can easily see when I get to the full number of repetitions of the chart. Now I can see exactly where I am because I have the marker on row 1 and I can count stitches down the row to find my place.

I am rolling the edging and pinning it with a giant stitch holder so I’m not constantly untangling it from the working yarn. I make the part before the rolled up part long enough so that it will sit on my lap while I’m knitting and not put weight on the knitting.

When I finished the edging, I pinned it out quickly to make sure there were no errors that would drive me crazy when it was done. I didn’t want to go on to make the bulk of the shawl before checking.

Was knitting this on Addi Turbos and having to pull down each stitch for K2tog. Switched to Addi Turbo Lace needle (sharper point) and it’s going a LOT faster. Thank you Addi!!!

For the garter stitch part, I have a pink marker on one edge, two stitches in, and a purple marker on the other edge, two stitches in. The center stitch has one pink and one purple marker on either side of it. The markers match the markers at the edges. That way, whenever a row starts with the pink marker near the edge, I know I decrease; when the center stitch has a pink marker first, I know to decrease in the center; and when the row ends with a purple marker, I know to decrease again.

This shawl sat in a bag for three years. I finally liberated it and blocked it. The photos are in chronological order, with a photo of the unblocked shawl below the shawl being blocked and the photos above the shawl being blocked are the blocked shawl.
