I have varying amounts of vintage pure wool fingering-weight yarns that I acquired from a local Facebook seller, and am going to pull some of them together for the Talkeetna. I’ve weighed them all but the metreage is just an estimate, so I’m crossing my fingers that it all works out!
The swatch measured 27 stitches on 3.5mm needles over colour work so I’m going to go up to the 6th size.
30.05.24
Started with a ball of bottle green weighing 16.6g, 3.25mm needles.
31.05.24
Somehow ended up with three extra stitches so had to frog back. Finished first ball of green and joined in 2nd (12g) on row 3 of yoke chart.
CC2 mustard 7.83g used
CC1 finished for yoke, used 2.84g - 19.44g in total so far.
CC3 Shetland wine, 11.15g.
CC4 turquoise 17.74g
01.06.24
CC5 fuchsia pink started, 26.42g. All my potential colour combinations were based on there being six contrasts but I just can’t count as there are only five, so I’m not including the royal blue and I’m not sure it will look as good as I’d envisaged as that was the buffer between the muted and zingy shades.
02.06.24
I’ve come to a halt as the sky blue I’d planned for the main colour doesn’t look right so close to the turquoise, so I think I’m going to try to find a beige/oatmeal instead.
27.06.24
Found a yarn for the main colour so I’ve picked this back up.
10.07.24
I liked the colour but decided the BC Garn Bio Shetland GOTS is too thin compared to the coloured yarn, so I went for The Fibre Co. Cumbria instead, colour is Scafell Pike.
05.08.24
I’m about 8cm into the body and it looks huge - measures 148cm rather than the 137cm expected for that size, so I’m going to decrease under the armholes on alternate rows, starting on the outside of the markers I’d placed to tell me which were the cast-on stitches.
13.08.24
I give in. I’ve measured it again after the decreases and it’s still 148cm! I’m going to frog it back to the end of the colourwork, remove the last row of yoke increases, go down to 3.25mm needles, and also do some serious maths around the gauge to make sure I get it closer to what I need.
20.08.24
I’ve redone the decreases, decreased on row 57, and ended up with 460 stitches which is close to the 462 required for size 5, so I’m going to continue with the instructions for size 5 now, but move some stitches from the back to the front to allow for my bust. The measurement here is 66.7in/184cm.
11.10.24
I was so bored with knitting the body that I had a break and made two hats. I think it’s still too wide so I’ve moved on to the sleeves before I make a decision on what to do about it.
14.10.24
First sleeve finished hurrah! I stuck with the 3.25mm needles for the whole sleeve, including the fancy ribbing, and used a 3.75mm for the bind-off https://youtu.be/SbzeEg6XMwM?si=Qws_fRKRANMGNFxY
01.11.24
I finished the second sleeve and decided, after trying it on, that the body is way too big - like, 6-8 inches too big! So I’m frogging back to the sleeve separation, putting the stitches back on the cable, then seeing how many decreases I can remove by working back individual stitches. Wish me luck!
Amounts used for sleeves:
CC1: 15g
CC2: 7.52g
CC3: 6.95g
CC4: 7.75g
CC5: 6.93g
