I tweaked the pattern in a couple places:

Only did 3 rows of skulls before starting the decreases, since the hat was tall enough.

Mostly ignored the full chart and just paid attention to a single skull. Every time I finished a row of skulls I moved the BoR a half skull (6 sts) forward and then knit the full skull pattern, to avoid jogs where the rounds ended.

I knit in the old row color until the far side of the first skull, the column of the first row decrease (see photo attached - pink is new BoR, yellow is knit in old background color)
