Not having access to Spincyle Yarns in Australia, I decided to use stash and scrappy leftovers for my shawl.
- All yarn was fingering/sock weight.
- I used 280g of yarn all up.
- I held two strands of yarn together for each row.
- I alternated colours/tones for each row. I had 4 strands of yarn “live” at all times - 2 held together for one row, a different 2 for the second row.
- I changed yarn colour when one ran out or when I just felt like it, one strand at a time.
Some more tips
-
Firstly organise your scraps into colour families and have a rough idea of how you want to transition from one group to another. My plans almost always change as I start to knit and I see how different colours are working together - so don’t be too strict with your planning!
-
Don’t use all the colours! I tend to stick to a max of 3 or 4 colour families and transition back and forth between them.
-
You can use speckles to tie your different families of colour together. For example, if my plan is to start with pink tones and gradually move into green tones, I’ll try and find pink scraps that have green speckles. Then, if I know I’m moving to blue tones next, the green scraps might have blue speckles.
-
Use colours you LOVE. You will honestly be surprised with how most colours work well together when you knit them this way (holding them double). So just pick some colours that you love and enjoy the process!
-
Never knit with Red! No, just kidding. I personally never use red because I don’t like how it overwhelms the other colours, but you might be better at using it than me!

Have fun and don’t overthink it too much!
